The challenge

The agency manages more than 700,000 acres of public land — parks, wildlife reserves, and open space areas under its jurisdiction. Some areas see heavy recreation; others are remote and rarely visited but still carry conservation and safety responsibilities. With limited rangers and stewardship staff, monitoring was concentrated on high-use zones, leaving large areas effectively unobserved unless a wildfire, dumping incident, or off-road damage forced attention.

02

The program

By deploying Lens agentic monitoring, the agency extended visibility across its entire land base without adding staff. Monitoring agents are configured around key priorities — vehicle access, new clearings, and disturbance near roads and trails. High-risk areas are reviewed monthly using fresh aerial and satellite imagery, while remote regions are checked as needed or after major environmental events.

03

The outcome

Early monitoring reveals subtle but critical changes: unauthorized trails forming near wilderness boundaries, seasonal camping increasing along a river corridor, and clearing near an easement. Alerts now flow directly into the agency's GIS and reporting systems, allowing staff to prioritize inspections, coordinate enforcement, and document acceptable public use. Instead of relying on occasional field patrols or public reports, the team now has an ongoing picture of how, and where, activity is shifting across hundreds of thousands of acres.
